Using Low Voltage LED Landscape Lights
Today’s LED landscape lights are a great way to illuminate your backyard landscaping with style! Simple to install, safe, inexpensive and it really adds value to your landscaping design. Low voltage wiring can be buried only inches below the surface and is impervious to the elements.
In the not-so-distant past you had to run 110V underground wiring, in metal conduit, if you wanted outdoor lighting. This really limited your options and was extremely labor intensive – ie. expensive.
As a result, few could afford the time or expense it took. It was only the wealthy who had enviable yards with outdoor lighting amidst their landscaping elements. Things have changed. Now virtually anyone can afford to add low voltage LED lights to their landscape design.
Low voltage solar lights have economical LEDs and are powered by tiny solar batteries that are recharged during the day by a small solar panel on each fixture. Most of these are small and inconspicuous and they come in many different sizes, styles and shapes.
There are also outdoor solar lamps on posts made in many styles and look great beside a bench or large grouping of plants or rocks. These look just like traditional lampposts but are no maintenance, operate totally free and, of course are much easier to install (like just stick ’em in the ground).
You can also purchase solar LED “caps” that fit onto the ends of fence or deck posts. Others install simply by poking a small stake into the ground. The small walkway or path lights are perfect for placement in and around landscaping elements like flowers, small bushes, and edgings and they give off a nice, soft light that doesn’t generate any heat.

There are other low voltage lighting options you may not have thought of, like outdoor rope lights and even Christmas lights. Make sure you get low voltageor solar lighting and the product is approved for year-round outdoor use. There are lots of options – even LED lights that flicker like candles – and if they’re solar, won’t add a single dime to your electric bill!
